Breakie in the city - hit up VIVO

Before you right off breakfast in the city as some raisin toast in a paper bag with a burnt take-away coffee or microwave scrambled eggs served with supermarket toast and opt for a trendy Darlinghurst cafe, go for breakie at VIVO Cafe.

This 200 seater on the corner of George and King St. (diagonally across from the big grey and glass mac store box) serves up a breakfast that rivals any other that I’ve had in Sydney – and believe me, I’ve had alot of breakies! They have also nailed the 5 primary requirements of a great breakfast out; food, coffee, atmosphere, value and service. With 5 baristas handling 3 coffee machines and an army of helpful waiters serving top notch breakie, you couldn’t ask for much more.

The hard working  brother-sister team who run VIVO credit the cafe’s success to their belief in good service and making most of their food inhouse – I think they do everything except for baking the bread and laying the eggs!

By day this busy city café is a hub for professionals from the adjoining office blocks and its sunny courtyard and relaxed indoor dining is hugely favoured for everything from a quick breakfast or coffee, to the longer ‘business’ lunch, or after-work drinks.

Angela had arranged for us all to – quite literally – eat our way through the café’s menus, beginning with slider-sized samples of Vivo’s iconic burgers, outside under the super-efficient heat-lamps, along with drinks. Platters of wagyu burgers with caramelised onion, Portuguese chicken, Thai chicken, grilled barramundi (my fave) and Aussie steak burger with an egg on top were quickly demolished. OK, we were hungry at that point!

Location, location, location may be the old recipe for business success, but it seems that Angela Vithoulkas and her vibrant Vivo café group may have added a new slogan.

Cooperation, collaboration and communication now seems to be the key.

VIVO Cafe is situated on George Street, most probably the busiest street in Sydney’s CBD.  The first thing I notice about Vivo Cafe on approach was the large raised outdoor seating area.  This is not a common sight these days in Sydney’s CBD.  Most cafes have indoor dining, court yard access or are part of a food court, but not on the main drag.

Vivo Cafe is in prime position to watch the goings on, and as a people watcher (woops my secret is out) it is a perfect spot for breakfast or lunch.  Umbrellas to shade you in summer and heaters to keep you toasty warm in winter.

Next thing I notice is the warm inviting interior of the cafe.  If you don’t want to sit outside, don’t panic.  Warm colours married with high ceiling to floor glass windows and doors makes for a very pleasant environment.

While waiting for the others to arrive I have a wander around.  I notice large bags of roasted coffee beans, big barrels of biscuits and a very large glass counter.  The counter during the day is filled with deli type meals to give busy CBD cliental the option to grab and go.  Think sandwiches, baguettes, gourmet salads as well as prepared meals like pastas, roasts, curries or soups.  Perfect to take back to the office to warm up or grab to take home after a busy day.

Cafe Vivo is open Monday to Thursday 6am – 5pm and Friday 6am to 6.30pm.  They offer a range of services for their customers, space for your next business meeting, birthday celebration, cocktail party, tweetups for those twitterers out there, workshop and course break lunches, private functions, charity events, Christmas parties and much more.

I can now say that I am very familiar with the Vivo menu.  Will be back for the Thai beef salad, mango and lime smoothie, the warm welcoming staff and a good spot of people watching.

A bunch of Twitter friends got together on Friday night at VIVO Cafe in Sydney. Invited by owner Angela Vithoulkas, we arrived around 6pm and four hours later we had enjoyed over 20 courses!

It was fantastic to catch up with Angela again, who was a great supporter of my Black Dog Ride last year (hosting my fundraising event at VIVO cafe)

We live in amazing times: a little activity (ok, maybe a lot in my case :-) on Twitter and some good old fashioned networking and you get invited to events like these with smart, lovely people.  I am proud to know Angela and congratulate her and her team on building a great cafe business.

We were also entertained with live jazz and vocals.

Here are highlights of all the amazing dishes we tried.  My favourites: grilled haloumi & roast vegetable salad, wagyu beef burger, parmesan scrambled eggs, and the Vietnamese chicken salad. Nom!
